About Us

Learn about us and how you can get involved

Is your church looking to join a network and community of churches and experience the power of locking arms with others to make an impact for the Kingdom?  Or, are you a person searching for a way to get involved in a ministry in the greater Cumberland Valley area?  We want to help!

Who We Are?  And Why Are We Here?

We at SUMZBA are often asked, “What is the South Union Mt. Zion Baptist Association?”  We know, it is a long name.  Yet, it also tells the story of our history and our vision.

As an association, much like people and other organizations, we need to be able to answer two of the most important questions:  Who are we? and Why are we here?

SUMZBA is a network and community of over 50 churches throughout the Cumberland Valley in Southeastern Kentucky and Northern Tennessee.  Our founding belief is found in Acts 1:8 [NIV]

“…and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Together with other Southern Baptists, we form one of the largest mission-sending organisms in history!  With God’s word, we proclaim the only good news for the ills of mankind.  Associations are a critical part of this.  In the book of Acts Chapter 15, we see the Apostle Paul assemble one of the first associations, the Council of Jerusalem…

  • …included representatives from several churches.            [Acts 15:1-18]
  • …counsel sent circular letter to Antioch, Syria, Cilicia.     [Acts 15:19-35]
  • …circular visitation of churches resulted.                            [Acts 15:36-41]

So, where is our Jerusalem?  Our Judea?  Or Samaria?

SUMZBA is located in Williamsburg, KY in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains.  The member churches of our association are located in Whitley County along with parts of Knox and Laurel Counties in Kentucky and part of Campbell County, TN.  Our region is home to about 38,000 residents.  Our member churches are made up of about 12,500 members, or about 33% of the population.  When you drive the roads and streets in our area, usually our houses of Worship are the largest gathering places in the countryside and towns with the exception of the area schools.  This is our Jerusalem.  We also work with other churches, associations, and groups to reach all of Kentucky (our Judea), and to North America (our Samaria).  We also support a variety of missions and projects globally as well (ends of the earth).  By us joining together, our associations and our member churches are reaching out and doing more than we could ever do alone!
